These photos were taken Monday, Aug. 10, on The Dolphin Whale Watch, out of Provincetown, MA. It was a beautiful warm sunny day and I think the whales were having fun. These shots were all taken using my sigma 28-70 lens. Wish I had had the Canon 70-300 IS lens on for the breaching shots but hindsight is always 20-20, isn't it? Next time I will do it differently. Enjoy! Whale Breaching Another Whale breaching Breaching again This is the last whale we saw breach, after he fell back into the water he rolled onto his side and we could see one of his flippers and 1/2 of his flukes above water. He continued to wave that flipper for several minutes. This pod of 5 whales was alongside the boat for several minutes and I got some great shots This shows the flukes of one of the whales in the pod when he decided to dive The pattern on the underside of the flukes is one way of identifying individual whales. This whale and another came right towards the boat and dove deep right near it.

Jean, these are amazing shots. I've really enjoyed them. I particularly like the shot of the whales alongside the boat.
Thanks for posting these.

Thanks, Maureen. It was really a great day for photographing the whales. My mom had been out 3 or 4 times before that trip with me and she said she never saw as much as we did that day. Each boat that the company sends out has an onboard naturalist and that person is very informative so it is not only a great chance to see the whales (and maybe other things) you also learn a lot, too.

Thanks Robert. The 2 trips were great fun and I will definitely do them again when visiting family up there. Too bad they are sooo far away, it would make for a wonderful road trip for photographers.

Unfortunately it is a 3 day drive or I would say, "hop in, we're off!" All being well I will go back next summer to see family and will definitely include at least 1 whale watch in the trip. The whales winter in the Carib, I wonder if there is some place that does whale watches in the winter? Still wouldn't be a cheap or quick trip unfortunately. We will have to do Paynes Prairie, Viera, etc., once the temps cool down!
I'm thinking i would like to plan another AK cruise-tour. I keep getting these flyers from different cruise lines....
