Linda, there are lots of good books on bird ID'ing. I have several, but the one that I use over and over is FLORIDA'S BIRDS, Herbert Kale & David S. Maehr. It's an easy reference and limited to birds seen in Florida, so you don't have to wonder if what you've identified is a bird that's only seen occasionally in Australia.
