These were taken at the Viera Wetlands (Brevard County) on 2/17/2009. I don't know if you have any Caracara in Citrus County, but for sure you have the Belted Kingfisher. And a funny looking Pied Billed Grebe Chick..........

Very nice, Ira.
I see the Caracara is banded. Do you know anything about that? I noticed too that all of the scrub jays I've seen both on the east coast and over here are banded as well.
And, indeed we do have caracara over here, but it's rare that you see them.

Very nice, Ira. I see the Caracara is banded. Do you know anything about that? I noticed too that all of the scrub jays I've seen both on the east coast and over here are banded as well. And, indeed we do have caracara over here, but it's rare that you see them. At the Viera Wetlands, a maited pair of Crested Caracara are banded to track their movements. In addition, the Male is outfitted with a radio transmiter, and at rhe right angle you can see the antania for the radio. The ofspring of this pair are not banded. It's part of a study of the range of the birds and their movements. (The adults stay in the Viera Wetlands area, but the offspring tend to move to other areas of the state as they get older.). The radio antenia of the Male Caracara can be clearly seen in the following photo.......As to the Scrub Jays, many of them at MINWR and the Cruickshank Sanctuary are banded, but not all of them. The Scrub Jays are endangered, as such, many studies are going on to track the progress of efforts to save them, thus the reason for banding them.
